"To raise new questions, new possibilities, to regard old problems from a new angle, requires creative imagination and marks real advance in science."

Project Questions

  • The importance of identifying a plant/root correctly is that each plant has different properties. Some may help clot bleeding, but some may provoke blood flow and increase bleeding.
  • It's useful to know a variety of species from other regions as well as your own area because you may be traveling out of the area when something happens where you would need to find a remedy as soon as possible, or if you were hungry, you would know which plants are safe to eat and which are dangerous to consume.
  • It would make a significant difference when traveling in different seasons because not only are some plants a lot harder to identify without the bloom, but certain parts of the plant will not be available for use all the time such as the flower.
  • As a scientist, it would be significant to develop a relationship with natives and their plant habitat because they already know which plants are helpful and which are hurtful, so it saves you a lot of research.
  • If I were found without traditional medicine, I would trust my knowledge of local flora to cure my illness because as long as it is rather minor, I know how to fix it. However, I may not know how to use all of the plants such as which to make into teas and which make a poultice.
